Baiyin Map Poster
Baiyin lies north-east of Lanzhou in the dry uplands of central Gansu. Its name means white silver, and the modern city grew from the 1950s around copper and other metal mining. The map shows that planned origin: a compact grid of broad streets and industrial blocks set in a landscape of bare, deeply eroded hills.
Beyond the built-up area, dry gullies and ridges fan out in every direction. On a poster they appear as open space with only the occasional road threading through. The contrast between the ordered centre and the surrounding terrain is the city's defining feature from above, and it is sharper than in most places of a similar size.
The Yellow River passes through the wider prefecture and feeds the farming valleys beyond the city. A Baiyin map poster is a portrait of an industrial town in a demanding setting.
