Bāniyās Map Poster & Print
Bāniyās lies on the Syrian coast in Tartus Governorate, on a narrow strip of flat land between the Mediterranean and the foothills of the coastal mountains. The town stretches along the shore, and its streets either run parallel to the sea or climb inland toward the higher ground behind it.
Known in antiquity as Balanea, it later became an industrial centre, home to one of Syria's two oil refineries and a coastal terminal for crude oil exports. These installations take up large rectangular areas along the shore and give the map a distinctly engineered edge beside the older, finer-grained town.
Just to the south, on a steep hill overlooking the sea, stands Marqab Castle, a massive black basalt fortress held for a time by the Knights Hospitaller. A Bāniyās map poster reads as a meeting of three things: the long coastline, the working port and the hills that rise quickly behind the town.
