Belfort Map Poster & Print
Belfort sits in the Belfort Gap, the low corridor between the Vosges and the Jura that has served for centuries as a route between the Rhine and the Rhône. The Savoureuse river runs north to south through the city. On its east bank the compact old town lies at the foot of a rocky outcrop crowned by the citadel.
The fortifications were reworked by Vauban, and the city is famous for resisting a long siege in the Franco-Prussian War of 1870 to 1871. That siege is commemorated by the Lion of Belfort, a huge red sandstone sculpture by Bartholdi carved into the cliff below the citadel. Its outline faces the city.
A Belfort map poster shows the full layering of the city: the angular bastions and star-shaped outworks around the citadel, the tight old streets beneath them, and the wider nineteenth-century and modern districts spreading west of the river. Few mid-sized French cities show their military past this clearly from above.
