Glacial upland
Glaciers cover much of the island's high ground, giving the interior a broad, smooth surface that contrasts with the ragged coastline around it.

Bennett Island Map Poster & Print
Bennett Island is the largest of the De Long Islands, a remote group northeast of the New Siberian Islands in the East Siberian Sea. It is rugged and high for its size, with an upland partly covered by glaciers and steep slopes falling to the sea. The coastline is compact and angular, broken by capes and small bays.
The island was discovered in 1881 by George De Long's Jeannette expedition and named after James Gordon Bennett Jr., the newspaper publisher who funded the voyage. In 1902 the Russian explorer Eduard Toll set out from the island with a small party and was never seen again, a loss that still defines its story.
A Bennett Island map poster shows a solitary form: a raised, glaciated interior, sharp capes and nothing but sea around it. There are no roads or towns, so the drawing is carried by the coast and the ice. It suits people fascinated by polar exploration and by stories of discovery at the far edge of the known world.

Angular capes
The shoreline breaks into distinct headlands and small bays, so this small island has a surprisingly detailed and angular outline.
Open Arctic sea
The other De Long islands lie at a distance, so Bennett usually stands alone in the frame, with quiet water filling most of the composition.
