Bergama lies in the north of İzmir Province, on the edge of the fertile Bakırçay plain. The modern town sits at the base of a steep hill, and on the map its dense old quarters cling to the lower slopes while newer neighbourhoods spread across the flat ground below. A small river runs through the centre, and roads lead out across the valley toward the coast.
Above the town rises the acropolis of ancient Pergamon, capital of the Attalid kingdom and site of a famous library. Pergamon and its surrounding landscape were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2014, including the Asclepion healing sanctuary and the vast Red Basilica, which stands in the town itself. The word parchment is traditionally linked to Pergamon.
