Planned street grid
The town is laid out largely on long parallel streets crossing at right angles, making its outline neat and easy to read at the centre of the frame.

De kaart
Beruniy Map Poster & Print
Beruniy lies in the southern part of Karakalpakstan, in western Uzbekistan, on the right side of the Amu Darya valley. This is the old land of Khorezm, where agriculture depends entirely on irrigation, and a map of the area is shaped by canals as much as by roads. The town itself is an orderly grid of streets, surrounded by fields divided into long, straight parcels.
The town is named after Abu Rayhan al-Biruni, the scholar born in this region in 973, near the ancient Khorezmian capital of Kath. Al-Biruni wrote on astronomy, mathematics, geography and history, and his name links this modest town to one of the most important figures of medieval science.
A Beruniy map poster sets the tidy street grid against the geometry of the irrigated landscape. Canals appear as long, thin lines, sometimes straight and sometimes bending with the terrain, while the river valley and the desert beyond provide broad areas of calm. In black and white, the structure reads with unusual clarity from centre to edge.

Irrigation canals
Canals and ditches cross the surrounding farmland in long lines, the lifeline of agriculture in Khorezm and one of the most distinctive features of the map.
Amu Darya valley
The broad valley of the Amu Darya lies close by, its braided channels and floodplain contrasting with the orderly fields and streets of the town.
