Bhīmunipatnam lies on the coast of Andhra Pradesh, north of Visakhapatnam, at the mouth of the Gosthani River. From above, the town sits between the curve of the river estuary and a long, straight line of beach. Low hills rise inland, and a coastal road runs south along the shore toward the city, with the sea always on one side.
This was once a trading port. The Dutch established a settlement here in the seventeenth century, and their cemetery with its carved tombstones still survives. Bhīmunipatnam became a municipality in 1861, which makes it one of the oldest municipalities in India. Today it is known mostly for its quiet beach and the scenic drive from Visakhapatnam.
