Billerica lies in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, south of Lowell and northwest of Boston. From above, it has the classic structure of an old New England town: a central common with a church and civic buildings, and roads radiating from it through a landscape of woods, ponds and suburban neighbourhoods.
The Concord River runs north through the town on its way to the Merrimack, and the route of the historic Middlesex Canal, one of the earliest canals in the United States, passes through Billerica as well. Settled in the seventeenth century, the town grew from farms into a residential and industrial suburb, crossed today by Route 3 and nearby highways.
