The coast road
Sumatra's northern trunk road runs straight through town. On the map it is the clear backbone that nearly every other street branches from.

De kaart
Bireun Map Poster & Print
Bireun sits on the flat coastal plain of Aceh, a short distance inland from the Strait of Malacca. From above it reads as a linear town. The main road along Sumatra's north coast runs straight through the centre, and the densest blocks cluster on either side of it before loosening into village lanes, fishponds and paddy fields.
Locals know Bireun as Kota Juang, the city of struggle, a name linked to its part in Indonesia's fight for independence. The regency around it stretches from the shoreline up toward the Gayo highlands, and the Peusangan River, which rises in those mountains, crosses the regency on its way to the sea. The land climbs gently away from the coast, and roads follow it inland.
A Bireun map poster keeps that simple structure: one strong spine of road, a scatter of side streets, and a soft edge where built-up land gives way to fields and coast. It suits anyone with family ties to Aceh, or anyone who remembers travelling the long coast road between Banda Aceh and Medan.

Fields at the edge
Past the last blocks, the street pattern thins into lanes that follow paddy boundaries and irrigation lines, which gives the outer poster a fine, uneven texture.
Toward the strait
North of the centre the land runs down to the Strait of Malacca, so the coastline adds a long, quiet horizontal edge to the composition.
