Coastal ridges
Long limestone ridges run parallel to the Mediterranean shore. They guide roads and settlements into east–west bands that are easy to see from above.

Burj al ‘Arab Map Poster & Print
Burj al ‘Arab lies west of Alexandria, where the Nile Delta's cultivated land gives way to the coastal desert. The map shows a town set among long ridges running parallel to the Mediterranean shore. Irrigated farms and the edges of the Mariout lowlands lie to one side and open desert to the other. Roads run mostly east–west, following the grain of the land.
Nearby stands Taposiris Magna, an ancient temple site on the ridge by the coast, with a tower that is often compared to the lost Pharos lighthouse of Alexandria. Further inland, the planned city of New Borg El Arab has grown into a major industrial centre, and the regional airport serves Alexandria from here.
A Burj al ‘Arab map poster puts old and new side by side. There's the looser pattern of the original town, the rigid blocks of the planned city and the long lines of highways and ridges. In Sand the desert setting comes through naturally, with the coastline and farmland marking the edges of the frame.

Taposiris Magna
The ancient temple and its lighthouse-like tower stand on the ridge near the sea. They are a reminder of this coast's long history as a route west from Alexandria.
Planned new city
Inland, New Borg El Arab's regular blocks and industrial zones form a precise grid. It contrasts sharply with the organic streets of the older town.
