Buta lies in the north of the Democratic Republic of the Congo and serves as the administrative centre of Bas-Uele province. The Rubi River passes by the town, and on a map its winding course sets the direction for much of the settlement, with roads following the higher, drier ground beside it.
From above, the pattern is modest and clear. A central grid laid out during the colonial period gives way to looser neighbourhoods, and then to tracks that fade into the surrounding forest. Green space dominates the edges of the frame, so the built area reads as an island of lines in a large field of empty paper.
