Butha-Buthe is the capital of the district of the same name in the far north of Lesotho. It lies in the lowland strip near the Caledon valley and the South African border, with the Maloti Mountains rising to the east. On a map, the town is a modest cluster of streets along the main road, with ridges and open ground all around it.
The streets form a loose network rather than a strict grid. There is a small central area with commercial buildings and government offices, and neighbourhoods spread across the gentle slopes around it.
