Canela sits on the high plateau of the Serra Gaúcha in southern Brazil, beside its neighbour Gramado. On the map, the town centre forms a compact grid on fairly level ground, and the surrounding area breaks up into forested valleys and steep drops where rivers have cut into the plateau.
North of the centre, the Caracol stream plunges over the Cascata do Caracol, a tall waterfall inside a state park. It gives the map a clear green area crossed by paths. Roads leading out of town follow ridges and curves, linking Canela with Gramado and the smaller settlements in the hills.
