Castelnau-le-Lez adjoins Montpellier to the northeast, and on the map the boundary is marked mainly by the Lez, a short Mediterranean river that runs south towards the sea. The town rises from its eastern bank, with its older village core on higher ground and newer neighbourhoods spreading out across the gentle slopes around it.
The street plan mixes several eras. Near the old centre, lanes are short and irregular. Further out, curving residential streets and cul-de-sacs from the late twentieth century fill much of the area, alongside business zones and major roads. Tramway line 2 crosses the town and links it directly to central Montpellier.
