Hillside layout
Streets and compounds follow the shape of the slopes rather than a grid, producing an irregular, organic outline that clearly reflects the terrain.

Chelenko Map Poster & Print
Chelenko is a town in the East Hararghe zone of Oromia, in the highlands west of Harar. The terrain here is hilly and broken, and on the map the town appears as a modest cluster of streets and compounds following the lie of the land. A main road provides the backbone, while paths and smaller lanes wander off across slopes covered with small fields.
The name holds a significant place in Ethiopian history. In January 1887 the Battle of Chelenko was fought nearby, when forces led by Menelik, then king of Shewa, defeated the army of the Emir of Harar. The victory brought Harar under Shewan control and marked an important step in the expansion that shaped the modern Ethiopian state.
A Chelenko map poster pairs that history with a quiet, rural image. The eastern highlands are intensively farmed, and the land around the town is divided into small plots, with khat among the crops common across the zone. On paper, the result is a delicate web of roads and tracks with the settlement at its heart, simple and precise.

Main road
A principal road passes through town and links it with the wider Hararghe highlands, the firmest line in an otherwise delicate street pattern.
Small-plot farmland
Around the town, the cultivated hillsides are crossed by tracks and footpaths, a fine network that fills the surrounding space on the map.
