Cheyyar lies in Tiruvannamalai district in northern Tamil Nadu, on the river of the same name, a tributary of the Palar. The town's older streets gather near the riverbank. On a map the wide, sandy course of the river forms a strong line along one side of the settlement, crossed by bridges that carry the main roads.
Like many towns in the region, Cheyyar has an old temple at its core, and the streets around it follow the familiar pattern of lanes running parallel to the temple walls. Further out, the grid loosens into residential areas and paddy fields, and irrigation tanks appear as rounded bodies of water in the surrounding landscape.
In recent years the area has also gained a large industrial estate, which adds broad, planned plots to the outskirts.
