Chioggia stands on islands at the southern end of the Venetian lagoon, connected to the mainland and to the long sandbar of Sottomarina. Its historic centre has one of the most legible plans in Italy. A broad main street, the Corso del Popolo, runs down the spine of the island. Parallel canals flank it, and dozens of narrow lanes cross between them like the bones of a fish.
The town is one of the most important fishing ports in Italy, and its fish market and harbour remain central to daily life. It is often called a smaller Venice, with canals, bridges and boats moored along its quays. Next to it, Sottomarina adds a long sandy beach facing the Adriatic.
