Ciudad Valles is the main city of the Huasteca Potosina, the lush eastern region of the state of San Luis Potosí. From above, the city spreads along the Río Valles. The river winds through the urban area in broad bends, while a grid of streets fills the flat land on both sides.
The Sierra Madre Oriental rises to the west, and its green ridges and canyons are the source of the region's well-known turquoise rivers and waterfalls. Ciudad Valles is the usual starting point for visits to places such as the Tamul waterfall and the Micos cascades, which lie in the surrounding hills.
