Conegliano lies in the province of Treviso in Veneto, where the Venetian plain meets the first hills of the Prealps. The old town stretches along the foot of a hill crowned by the castle, with Via XX Settembre as its main arcaded street. Below and around it, the modern town spreads across the plain in a more regular pattern. The railway and the roads toward Treviso and Pordenone cut through it.
The town is a centre of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene hills, where Prosecco Superiore is made. The hills were inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2019. Italy's first school of oenology was founded here in 1876. Conegliano is also the birthplace of the Renaissance painter Cima da Conegliano, whose altarpiece still hangs in the cathedral.
