Contla, officially Contla de Juan Cuamatzi, lies in the state of Tlaxcala on the lower flanks of La Malinche, the large volcano that dominates the region. The town's streets form a fairly regular grid in the centre, but the land rises steadily to the east, and the map shows fields and roads stretching up toward the mountain.
The town has a long tradition of weaving, and textiles such as woollen sarapes have been made here for generations. It is part of the dense ring of towns around the city of Tlaxcala, and on a map its edges merge with neighbouring communities along shared roads, making the boundaries between settlements hard to see.
