Działdowo lies in the southwest of Warmia-Masuria, near the historic border between Prussia and Poland. Its map shows a small old town with a market square at the centre, the remains of a Teutonic Order castle nearby, and newer districts spreading out in blocks and estates. The Działdówka river passes through the area.
The town is a railway junction on the main line between Warsaw and Gdańsk, and the rail yards and tracks occupy a large part of the map. Działdowo, known in German as Soldau, was the site of a Nazi transit and extermination camp during the Second World War, a history marked by a memorial today.
