Elbasan Map Poster & Print
Elbasan lies in central Albania on the broad valley of the Shkumbin River, a natural corridor between the Adriatic coast and the interior. The river runs along the southern side of the city, and the plain opens out towards the west. To the north, hills rise quickly, so the city's growth has spread mainly east and west along the valley floor.
At the centre is the fortress, rebuilt by the Ottomans in the fifteenth century on the site of the Roman station of Scampa, which stood on the Via Egnatia. Its walls still enclose a square old quarter. West of the city, the huge metallurgical complex built in the communist era with Chinese help remains a landmark of a very different period.
