Euskirchen lies south-west of Cologne, where the flat Rhineland plain begins to lift toward the Eifel hills. The small Erft river and its tributary streams pass the town. On a map, the old centre shows up as a tight knot of irregular streets. Wider roads and newer residential districts spread around it, filling the open farmland in every direction.
The town is the seat of its district and a local rail hub. Several lines meet here, and their tracks cut long, clean arcs across the street pattern. Traces of the medieval layout survive in the curve of the inner streets. Around the centre, the grid loosens into post-war housing, industrial estates and fields that run up to the edge of the built-up area.
