Coastal road
A road follows much of Futuna's shoreline, linking the villages. On the map it traces the island's outline, just inside the coast, like a second border.

Futuna Map Poster & Print
Futuna is the main island of the Hoorn Islands, part of the French territory of Wallis and Futuna in the South Pacific. It is steep and mountainous, rising sharply from the sea, and the small island of Alofi lies just to the southeast across a narrow channel. From above, Futuna shows a compact, irregular outline with a forested, roadless interior.
Life on the island is centred on its coastal villages, and it is divided between two traditional kingdoms, Alo and Sigave. Futuna is also known as the place where the missionary Pierre Chanel was killed in 1841. He was later canonised, and a basilica at Poi honours him. A road runs around much of the coast, linking the villages.
A Futuna map poster shows a clear pattern. A road circles the shore, villages are spaced along it like beads, and the centre remains open where the mountains rise. Alofi sits alongside, almost empty of lines. Together the two islands make a balanced composition with a strong sense of the South Pacific setting.

Mountain core
The island's interior is steep and forested, with no road network. This leaves a broad, open space at the centre, surrounded by the ring of settlements.
Alofi alongside
The neighbouring island of Alofi sits just across a narrow channel to the southeast. Its nearly blank outline makes a quiet counterpart to Futuna's ring of villages.

Waarom Futuna
Een kaart met betekenis
For people from Futuna, and for the many Futunians living in New Caledonia and elsewhere, the island's outline is a strong link to home. Its ring of villages and paired neighbour Alofi also make a balanced, attractive print for anyone drawn to the Pacific.
