Gifhorn Map Poster & Print
Gifhorn grew at the meeting of the Aller and Ise rivers in eastern Lower Saxony, close to Wolfsburg and north of Braunschweig. On a map the two rivers thread through the town and its surroundings in slow, winding lines, with meadows, ponds and wooded areas along their banks. The old centre sits close to their confluence, a compact cluster of streets among the green spaces.
The historic core keeps a small grid of streets lined with half-timbered houses, and nearby stands Gifhorn Castle, a Renaissance palace surrounded by a moat that appears on the map as a crisp shape of water. Around this centre, later residential districts spread out on all sides, and main roads leave the town toward Wolfsburg, Braunschweig and Celle across flat, partly forested country.
Gifhorn is widely known for its International Mill Museum, where windmills and watermills from many countries stand around a lake at the edge of town.
