Golpāyegān lies in the north-west of Isfahan province, on a high plain where the Zagros mountains begin to rise. From above, the town has a clear structure. Main avenues cross it, and residential blocks and older lanes fill the spaces in between. Orchards and farmland lie at the edges, and bare mountain ridges frame it in the distance.
The town is known for its Jameh Mosque, whose brick dome dates from the Seljuk period and is one of the finest early examples of its kind in Iran. It is also linked to Grand Ayatollah Golpaygani, one of the most influential Shia scholars of the twentieth century. A dam on the river upstream supplies water to the farmland across the plain.
