De kaart

Gorlice Map Poster & Print

Gorlice sits in south-eastern Poland, where the Ropa river leaves the Low Beskid mountains. On a map, the town is shaped by that valley: the river curves through, the old centre sits on higher ground above it with a market square at its heart, and newer districts spread along the valley floor and onto the surrounding slopes.

The town has an important place in industrial history. In 1854 Ignacy Łukasiewicz lit a kerosene lamp on a street in Gorlice, one of the first uses of kerosene for street lighting, and the region became a cradle of the oil industry. In 1915, the town gave its name to a major offensive on the Eastern Front of the First World War.

A Gorlice map poster shows a town where river, hill and history meet. The market square forms a clear centre, streets radiate from it down toward the valley, and the Ropa runs as a strong, curving line. Wooded hills frame the edges. In black and white, it is a thoughtful image of a small place with a large story.
