Hilltop old town
The historic centre sits on the highest ground. Its narrow, winding streets form a dense knot on the map, surrounded by the looser layout of newer districts.

Guarda Map Poster & Print
Guarda sits high on the northeastern edge of the Serra da Estrela, at around a thousand metres above sea level. That makes it the highest city in Portugal. Its old centre crowns a hill, with narrow streets running around the granite cathedral and the remains of the medieval walls, while newer districts step down the slopes below.
The city was founded at the end of the twelfth century to guard the border with Castile, and its name reflects that role. Portuguese tradition sums up its character in five words beginning with F: forte, farta, fria, fiel e formosa, meaning strong, plentiful, cold, loyal and beautiful. The cathedral, built over a long period, has the heavy look of a fortress.
A Guarda map poster shows a hilltop city clearly. The dense, irregular old town sits at the summit, and roads loop down and outward over the uneven ground. In monochrome, the tight medieval core contrasts with the looser pattern of later growth, a clear picture of a city built for height and defence.

Waarom Guarda
Een kaart met betekenis
Guarda is a strong choice for anyone with roots in the Beira interior, a fondness for the Serra da Estrela or an interest in Portugal's border towns. It is a city defined by altitude and stone.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with the city's five Fs, and choose from Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Noir suits Guarda's cold granite character.
