Stade lies on the Schwinge, a small river that flows into the Elbe a few kilometres downstream. The old town sits on a rise enclosed by a moat that follows the line of former fortifications, and on a map this ring of water forms an almost complete oval around the medieval streets. It is one of the most striking town outlines in northern Germany.
At the centre is the Hansehafen, the old harbour, lined with gabled merchants' houses and the Schwedenspeicher, a warehouse from the period of Swedish rule in the seventeenth century that now houses a museum. The harbour basin cuts into the old town and gives it a working waterfront at its core.
