Radiating tracks
Unpaved tracks lead out from the settlement across the plain in several directions, thin lines that give the otherwise open map its structure.

De kaart
I-n-Tillit Map Poster & Print
I-n-Tillit lies in the Gao region of Mali, in the Gourma country south of the Niger River, a Sahelian landscape of sandy plains and sparse vegetation. On a map it appears as an open, low-density settlement: compounds and sandy lanes spread over flat ground, a few tracks leading away across the plain, and a great deal of empty space all around.
Life in this part of the Sahel has long revolved around herding and seasonal movement, with water and pasture shaping where people settle and travel. Settlements like I-n-Tillit act as fixed meeting places in a landscape where many people are on the move for part of the year, following the rains and the condition of the grazing land.
An I-n-Tillit map poster is spare and graphic. The few lines on it carry real weight: tracks radiating outward, clusters of compounds, and wide margins of blank ground that speak of distance and horizon. It is one of the most minimal maps in the collection, and that restraint is exactly what makes it compelling on a wall.

Compound clusters
Homes and enclosures group together in small, irregular clusters, producing a scattered, dotted pattern quite unlike the streets of a planned town.
Open Sahel
Around the settlement, most of the map is empty ground, a reminder of the scale of the landscape and the distances between places here.
