Igatpuri sits high in the Western Ghats in Nashik district, at the top of the climb from the Konkan lowlands. From above, the railway is one of the defining lines. The Mumbai–Nashik line climbs the Kasara ghat nearby, and Igatpuri grew as an important railway town. Its streets spread across a hilly plateau with the tracks and a major highway running alongside.
The countryside around is dramatic. Ridges and hills rise in every direction, and reservoirs and lakes sit in the valleys. Kalsubai, the highest peak in Maharashtra, is not far away. During the monsoon the hills turn green and waterfalls appear, which draws visitors from Mumbai and Nashik.
