Onahama harbour
The port's breakwaters and angular quays are the most geometric shapes on the coastline. They contrast with the soft curves of the beaches and headlands to the north and south.

Iwaki Map Poster & Print
Iwaki covers an unusually large area for a Japanese city. This is the result of a 1966 merger that joined more than a dozen towns and villages. On a map it reads as several distinct clusters rather than one centre: Taira around the main station, the port district of Onahama on the coast, and older settlements along the valleys that lead inland toward the forested Abukuma highlands.
The eastern edge is defined by the Pacific. Its shoreline of sandy bays, small fishing harbours and rocky headlands is broken up by river mouths. Onahama's breakwaters and quays form the sharpest geometry on the coast, while inland the street pattern loosens into farmland, rail lines and the winding roads of the hills. Rivers such as the Natsui and the Same cut clear lines from west to east.
Much of the city grew on the Joban coalfield, which was mined for about a century before the last pits closed in the 1970s. Its best-known afterlife is a spa resort built to use the hot water that once flooded the mine shafts. An Iwaki map poster captures that mix of coast, valley and scattered town in a single sheet of black lines on white.

Taira town centre
Around Iwaki Station the streets tighten into the densest grid in the city. This is the commercial heart of the former town of Taira, and rail lines fan out from here.
River valleys inland
West of the coast, rivers descend from the Abukuma highlands in parallel valleys. Each carries a road, a rail line or a string of villages between wooded ridges.

Waarom Iwaki
Een kaart met betekenis
For people from Iwaki, the map is less about one downtown than about the corner they know, such as a harbour street in Onahama or a valley road near the hills. Frame the whole coast or zoom in on a single district, then add a title, a family name or a date that matters.
There are five styles: Classic black and white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint suits the harbour and rail lines, while Paper gives the hills a softer look. The $9 HD download includes six print sizes as 300 DPI PNG and PDF files, or you can order a printed poster on matte paper.
