Joliet Map Poster & Print
Joliet grew along the Des Plaines River southwest of Chicago, and the river still runs north to south through the centre of the city. Alongside it lies the Illinois and Michigan Canal, completed in 1848 to link the Great Lakes with the Mississippi river system. From above, downtown sits in the narrow valley between them, with the street grid climbing the bluffs on either side.
Known as the City of Steel and Stone, Joliet built much of its early fortune on mills and on local limestone, the same stone used for the Old Joliet Prison, the castle-like penitentiary seen at the opening of The Blues Brothers. Historic Route 66 passes through the city, and major interstates cross nearby, making it a hub for road and rail freight.

The historic canal runs beside the river through the city, a thin parallel line that recalls Joliet's role on the nineteenth-century trade route between the Great Lakes and the Mississippi.
Old Joliet Prison
The former penitentiary, built of local limestone north of downtown, occupies a large walled rectangle beside the river corridor, one of the most distinctive shapes on the map.
