Kangayam is a town in Tiruppur district in western Tamil Nadu, on the gently rolling, relatively dry upland between Tiruppur, Erode and Dharapuram. Several regional roads meet here, and on a map the town appears as a hub from which routes radiate across open country, the built-up area concentrated at the junction and thinning out along each road.
The name is known across India through the Kangayam breed of cattle, a hardy draught breed raised in the surrounding area and valued for its strength and endurance. The landscape that supports it is one of pasture, scrub and cultivated land divided into enclosed plots, and that fine agricultural texture shows clearly on a map around the edges of the town.
Kangayam is also an important centre of coconut oil production, with mills processing copra from the wider region.
