The Teplá valley
The river bends through a steep, narrow gorge, and the spa quarter follows every curve, so the old town reads as one long line of streets hugging the water.

Karlovy Vary Map Poster & Print
From above, Karlovy Vary is mostly valley. The Teplá river twists north through a deep cleft in the hills, and the old spa quarter lines both banks in a thin, continuous ribbon. Streets can't spread sideways, so they climb in switchbacks or run along the water, and the forest reaches almost down to the colonnades.
At the northern end, the Teplá flows into the wider Ohře, and the map opens out. Newer districts, bridges and a looser street grid sit on the flatter ground around the confluence. The contrast is easy to read in black and white: a tight, sinuous spa core to the south and a broader town spreading along the Ohře to the north.
The town grew up around its hot springs, which still feed the drinking colonnades along the river, and each summer it hosts one of Europe's oldest international film festivals. A Karlovy Vary map poster captures a place whose layout was decided by water, both the thermal kind and the river that carved the valley.

Confluence with the Ohře
To the north the Teplá joins the Ohře, and the tight valley gives way to wider streets, bridges and the flatter ground where the modern town spreads out.
Forested hillsides
Dense woodland covers the slopes on either side of the spa quarter, leaving large blank areas that frame the thin band of buildings along the river.

Waarom Karlovy Vary
Een kaart met betekenis
People who have taken the waters here, attended the film festival or simply walked the colonnades often want a reminder of the valley's shape. The serpentine river and hillside streets make a striking composition even for people who have never been there.
