Kiritimati Map Poster & Print
Kiritimati, also known as Christmas Island, is one of the Line Islands in the central Pacific and belongs to Kiribati. It is the largest coral atoll in the world by land area. Seen from above, it looks less like a neat ring than a claw. A wide lagoon opens to the sea in the northwest, and the land around it spreads out in broad flats.
Much of the interior is a patchwork of shallow lagoons and salt ponds, some fully enclosed and separated by narrow strips of coral sand. On a map this creates an unusually complex pattern, with more water than land in places. Most of the island's villages sit near the main lagoon in the northwest, connected by a handful of roads.
Captain James Cook reached the atoll on Christmas Eve in 1777, which gave it its English name. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Britain and the United States carried out nuclear weapons tests in the area. Today the island is known for its seabird colonies and for fly fishing on the flats. Parts of the atoll and its small offshore islets are protected for nesting seabirds, which gather here in very large numbers. These areas remain largely free of roads and buildings.
