Lake Maggiore stretches for a long way north to south, starting in the Swiss canton of Ticino and ending in the Italian lowlands. On a map it reads as a slender, slightly curving ribbon, with the shoreline broken by small bays and river deltas along its length.
Locarno sits at the northern tip, where the Maggia river has built a broad delta out into the water. Further south, the shores are lined with towns such as Stresa, Verbania and Luino, their old centres and lakeside promenades running along narrow strips of flat land beneath wooded slopes.
The most recognisable detail is the Borromean Gulf on the western shore, where the small Borromean Islands sit in the water off Stresa. A Lake Maggiore map poster shows these as tiny, precise shapes against the open lake, with the Ticino river flowing in at the north and out again at the south.
