Lewiston Map Poster & Print
Lewiston stands on the east bank of the Androscoggin River in southern Maine, opposite its twin city, Auburn. The river drops over the Great Falls here, and that power made Lewiston one of New England's major textile centres in the nineteenth century. On the map, the river is the dominant line, bending past the city with bridges crossing to Auburn.
Near the falls, canals were cut to feed the mills, and their straight channels still run beside the long brick buildings of the old industrial district. Behind them, a grid of streets climbs towards the residential neighbourhoods. Bates College, a liberal arts college founded in 1855, has a green campus a short distance from downtown.
