Mahesāna lies on the level plain of north Gujarat, north of Ahmedabad. Its older centre is a compact area of narrow streets near the railway, while newer residential societies extend outward in more regular blocks. Highways and rail lines radiate from the town, and fields press close to its edges, giving the map a clear boundary between town and farmland.
The town is closely associated with dairying. Dudhsagar Dairy, based here, is among the largest milk cooperatives in Asia, and the Mehsani breed of buffalo takes its name from the district. Oil and gas fields in the surrounding area also brought industry. A short drive away stands the Sun Temple at Modhera, one of the finest monuments of the Solanki period.
