Two inland lakes
Two brackish lakes fill much of the island's interior. On the map they create a striking hollow centre, as if the island were a ring of land around its own water.

Maiao Map Poster & Print
Maiao lies in French Polynesia, west of Moorea in the Society Islands. It is small and remote by local standards, reached mostly by boat. From above it has a distinctive composition: a narrow ring of land with modest hills, enclosing two inland lakes, all surrounded by a coral reef and a lagoon.
The lakes are the island's defining feature on a map, two bodies of brackish water taking up a large share of the interior. Around them, the land is a thin green band with scattered houses, gardens and coconut palms. The outer reef draws a second, wider line around everything.
The community of Maiao has long taken care to control development and outside influence, and the island remains quiet and lightly settled. A Maiao map poster reads like a set of concentric forms, reef, land and inland water, each nested inside the other.

Encircling reef
A coral reef rings the island at some distance from the shore, drawing a second outline around Maiao and enclosing a calm lagoon between reef and beach.
Thin land ring
The inhabited land is a narrow band between lakes and lagoon, with a few low hills. It gives the poster a delicate, balanced shape with water on both sides.

Waarom Maiao
Een kaart met betekenis
Maiao appeals to people connected to the Society Islands and to those who like maps built on pure form. The nested shapes of reef, land and lake make a quiet, almost abstract image that suits a calm room.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line as you like. The poster comes in Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint and Sand. Blueprint emphasises the reef and lakes, and Paper keeps the look soft.
