Forested central spine
A chain of mountains runs the length of the island and leaves the interior largely roadless. On the poster this becomes a calm expanse bordered by fine river lines descending to the sea.

De kaart
Makira Map Poster & Print
Makira, once charted as San Cristobal, lies at the southeastern end of the main Solomon Islands chain. From above it reads as a long, narrow body tilted along a northwest to southeast axis. A forested ridge runs down the middle, and the land falls away on both sides toward a coastline of small bays, points and river mouths.
Most roads and settlements keep close to the shore, so on a map the interior is largely open space, broken only by streams draining off the central ranges. Kirakira, the provincial centre, sits on the north coast. The island gives its name to Makira-Ulawa Province, which also takes in several smaller islands offshore.
A Makira map poster is mostly about proportion: a large island with very little drawn on it, where the few lines that do appear carry real weight. A coastal track, a river, a small cluster of buildings. The emptiness of the interior becomes part of the composition rather than a gap in it, and the long diagonal gives the sheet a sense of movement.

Kirakira on the coast
The provincial centre is one of the few places where streets gather into something like a grid, a small, dense mark set against the long northern shoreline.
Rivers to the sea
Streams cut down from the highlands on both flanks, and their mouths notch the coastline at intervals, giving the outline a gently serrated rhythm.

Waarom Makira
Een kaart met betekenis
Makira suits people with a real tie to the Solomon Islands: family from the province, years spent working there, a long voyage through Melanesia. It is an unusual subject, and its long diagonal shape holds a wall well, especially in a tall frame.
You can set your own title and subtitle, add a date or the coordinates line, and pick one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint and Sand both flatter the wide areas of ocean around the island.
