Midland sits at the southern end of Georgian Bay, where a sheltered bay pushes into the shore. On a map the town is shaped by that harbour. Streets climb gently from the waterfront in a regular grid, and the shoreline, docks and marina break the edge of the grid into an irregular line.
King Street runs up from the water as the main street, and the downtown's murals have made it known well beyond the town. Residential blocks spread out on either side, and wooded land and smaller bays break up the edges of the built-up area. Offshore, Georgian Bay opens toward the Thirty Thousand Islands.
A Midland map poster puts the town and its bay together, the way they are experienced. On the eastern edge of town is Sainte-Marie among the Hurons, a reconstruction of a seventeenth-century Jesuit mission, with the Martyrs' Shrine on the hill beside it. Both have long drawn visitors to this shore.
