From above, the town appears as a dense cluster of buildings and narrow lanes. Around it spreads a fine mesh of long, thin agricultural plots that stretch out in every direction.
The wider district extends toward the southern margins of Lake Manzala, a large, shallow coastal lagoon between the Damietta branch of the Nile and the Suez Canal.
