Oval historic centre
The medieval town is drawn out into a long oval along the old valley road. Its parallel streets give the centre of the map a very clear outline.

Montevarchi Map Poster & Print
Montevarchi sits in the upper Valdarno, the stretch of the Arno valley between Florence and Arezzo. The historic centre has an unusual shape. It is long and oval, and it grew up along the ancient road through the valley, with parallel streets running the length of the old town. The Collegiata di San Lorenzo stands in the middle of it.
Outside the old core, the modern town spreads across the valley floor. There are newer residential blocks, a railway line on the Florence to Rome route, and industrial areas. The Arno runs to the west, and the land rises on both sides towards the Chianti hills and the Pratomagno ridge. The town is also known for the palaeontological museum of the Accademia del Poggio, which holds fossils found in the Valdarno.
A Montevarchi map poster shows the oval centre clearly, framed by the later town and the river. It is a thoughtful print for anyone who has lived in the valley, commuted to Florence, or spent time in this less-visited part of Tuscany between the two cities.

The Arno valley
The Arno runs west of the town through a wide, flat valley. The river and the railway create two long lines across the drawing.
Hills on both sides
The street network thins out as the ground rises towards Chianti and the Pratomagno. The result is a town set clearly within its valley.
