Neuchâtel lies on the northern shore of the lake that shares its name, at the foot of the Jura mountains. From above, the city is a long strip. Its waterfront, promenades and reclaimed land run along the lake, while streets climb in tiers up the steep slope behind.
The old town gathers around the hill where the castle and collegiate church stand, and its buildings are known for the pale yellow limestone of the region. Further up, residential districts follow the contours in winding roads, and a funicular links the lower city with the heights.
