Nizāmābād lies in northern Telangana, on the Deccan plateau between Hyderabad and the Maharashtra border. On the map, it is a compact city whose older quarters cluster around the historic fort, with newer neighbourhoods spreading outward along main roads. The city was historically known as Indur and was renamed after the Nizam of Hyderabad in the early twentieth century. It is an important agricultural market town, particularly for turmeric, and the wider district is home to the Nizam Sagar reservoir on the Manjira River.
