Nocera Superiore sits at the eastern edge of the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese, the fertile plain between Vesuvius and the hills of Salerno. From above, the town is not a single compact centre. It is a group of small settlements and hamlets connected by roads, with fields and greenhouses in between. Wooded slopes rise to the east and south, giving the map a clear edge where the plain meets the hills.
The area was once home to Nuceria Alfaterna, an important city in ancient Campania, and traces of that past survive in the ground. The most famous monument is the Baptistery of Santa Maria Maggiore, a round early Christian building with an inner ring of reused ancient columns. It is one of the oldest baptisteries in Italy and draws visitors from well beyond the region.
