Nova Lima lies just south of Belo Horizonte in Minas Gerais, in hilly country below the ridge of the Serra do Curral. On the map, there is no grid: streets curve along valleys and around hillsides, and the town is divided into separate clusters by steep terrain, streams and green areas.
The older centre of Nova Lima is compact and irregular, a legacy of its origins as a mining settlement. To the north, closer to Belo Horizonte, newer districts such as Vila da Serra have filled in with apartment towers, and much of the surrounding land holds gated residential communities with their own winding internal roads.
