Nowy Sącz was founded in 1292 by King Wenceslaus II and grew as a royal town on the trade routes toward Hungary. It sits in a wide valley where the Kamienica flows into the Dunajec, and the map shows the old town on raised ground between the two rivers. The wooded ridges of the Beskid Sądecki rise to the south and give the surroundings a folded green outline.
At the heart of the old town lies one of the largest market squares in Poland, with the town hall in its centre. Streets leave its corners in a regular medieval pattern, and the remains of a royal castle overlook the river. On the edge of the city, the Sądecki Ethnographic Park gathers traditional wooden buildings from across the region.
