Numazu stretches along the northern shore of Suruga Bay where the Izu Peninsula begins. On a map, the coastline defines everything: a smooth curve of shore to the west, a working harbour near the river mouth, and a more rugged, indented coast heading south toward Izu.
The Kano River flows through the city centre and into the bay, dividing the streets into two halves joined by bridges. Along the western shore, the Senbonmatsubara pine grove forms a long strip that separates the town from the sea.
A Numazu map poster brings these features into balance. The port is known for its fish markets and dried fish, and the grounds of the former Numazu Imperial Villa sit by the water. On clear days Mount Fuji appears to the north, though the map itself is all shoreline and streets.
